This summer, we invited our team to share snapshots of their favorite places in Appanoose County with our first-ever Employee Photo Contest. The theme was simple: “My Favorite Place in Appanoose County.”

 

The result? A collection of heartfelt photos and stories that showcase the hidden gems, local favorites, and natural beauty of the Centerville area.

 

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a long-time local, these photos remind us of just how much there is to see and do right here in our backyard.

9. Nature Center at Sharon Bluffs State Park

 

For families who love the outdoors, Sharon Bluffs State Park is a hidden gem. With hiking trails, a nature center, picnic areas, live animals, and camping, it’s the perfect spot for a weekend adventure.

8. Concerts on the Square

 

Centerville’s historic town square comes alive in the summer with Municipal Band Concerts and Bike Night events featuring live music. Locals gather with lawn chairs, kids dance on the courthouse lawn, and the sense of community is unmatched.

7. Country Roads Meat Market

 

When it comes to farm-to-table freshness, Country Roads Meat Market is a must-stop. With friendly service and everything from steaks and brisket to cheese and produce, it’s a local favorite for stocking up on quality food.

6. Ice Cream at Captain’s Landing

 

For a sweet treat, head to Captain’s Landing at Rathbun Lake. Their ice cream has a secret ingredient that keeps locals guessing—but everyone agrees it’s some of the best around.

5. Outdoor Pickleball 

 

A new pickleball court has quickly become a favorite gathering spot in the community. Dedicated in memory of Centerville local Kolton Gonnerman, it’s more than a place to play—it’s a reminder of the strength and togetherness of the town.

4. Rathbun Fish Hatchery

 

This educational treasure introduces visitors to the diverse fish species of Rathbun Lake. With aquariums, exhibits, and even occasional behind-the-scenes tours, the Rathbun Fish Hatchery is a fun and informative stop for all ages.

My favorite place to learn about the different fish species in Appanoose County is at Rathbun Fish Hatchery. This hidden gem has a ton of educational information for kids and adults on the fish we have in Rathbun Lake. It also includes a fish aquarium and exquisite scenery. Occasionally they will allow a private tour of the fish they raise in the back pools. You don’t want to miss this great learning experience! -Whitney Hill, Front Desk/Clerk

 

3. Lelah Bradley Park and Reservoir

 

For a quiet place to relax, Lelah Bradley Park is unbeatable. With wooded trails, a peaceful reservoir, and plenty of picnic spots, it’s the perfect place to unwind at the end of the day. This was the second-most photographed location by our staff. Lelah Bradley Park’s location in Centerville makes in an easy-to-access escape.

2. Lucile’s Restaurant

 

We promised, we didn't put anyone up to this next one! However, we agree that Lucile’s is more than just a restaurant in a charming historic building—it’s a place that feels like home. The inviting atmosphere and delicious food make it a favorite spot to both work and dine.

1. Fishing and Camping at Rathbun Lake

 

There is a reason this was our staff's most-photographed location! Known as “Iowa’s Ocean,” Rathbun Lake offers more than just beautiful views. From fishing and boating to swimming and camping, this vast lake is a playground for anyone who loves the outdoors.
